A few years ago I took a train trip up the coast of California from San Francisco all the way to Portland Oregon. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this city, but it surprised me with its’ multitude of personalities. On the one hand it has a very calm, quiet demeanor, and yet it exudes west coast quirkiness and charm at the same time. A city block in this town is quite compact, and it doesn’t take that long to walk from one end of downtown to the other. Right in the middle of the city is the Lan Su Chinese Garden offering a quiet place to wander around and relax. While only a few blocks away is the funky Voodoo Donuts that not only specializes in sweet confections, but also performs wedding ceremonies on site! The award winning Rose Garden and Japanese Garden can be found on a hill overlooking the city, with views of Mount Hood in the distance. Of course if you love books, then a trip to the five story Powells City of books is a must. Just about any new or used book you can imagine can be found here at this shop covering an entire city block. I can’t go without mentioning that Portland has a wonderful selection of restaurants, and friendly laid-back citizens, and the fact that Oregon is a tax-free state makes it all the more worthwhile to visit!
